F.A.Q.
What you need is to arrange for an EICR (Periodic Inspection condition Report) to be done by an electrician. This will give you a report of the condition of your current installation with list of items which all are either code C1 or C2 or C3
C1) Danger present, Risk of injury. Immediate action required.
C2) potentially dangerous, Urgent action required.
C3) improvement recommended
A condition report could take from 2 hours to half a day (on-site, plus write-up time) depending on the size of your property and could cost from £100-250. Anything shown as code C1 (see above) on your condition report must be dealt with straight away. And anything shown as code C2 should dealt with as soon as possible.
Be aware that no-one can force you to upgrade an existing SAFE installation to meet the current regs – they are not applied retrospectively. If what you already have met the rules in force when installed, and is still safe, then that’s fine. However, any remedial or new works must meet the current regs and this might well mean changing the fuse board for one with RCD protection, where this is the only way for all circuits to meet the 17th Edition wiring regs (BS7671:2008).
If you really do still have rubber covered cables in your installation then I would almost certainly suggest (albeit without a site inspection) that you will be needing a re-wire. The old rubber cables have several disadvantages, not least that they go brittle and crack over time – rendering their insulation properties void, but also that rodents love them!!
Or other easy way to find out if you need rewire
If your house got one of these below, you most likely need to rewire your house!
Fuse boxes with a wooden back
Cast iron switches
Round pin sockets or round light switches
Sockets mounted in skirting boards
If your switches has no back box or has a back box made from wood.
If your wiring has no Earth.
IF YOU THINK YOU NEED HELP WITH THIS CALL US ON 07912024140 WE WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE SAFE, AND IF IS NECESSARY TO RE-WIRE YOUR HOUSE WE CAN REWIRE YOUR HOUSE WITH ALL CERTIFICATION AND PART P CERTIFICATE.
There is no legal requirement that calls for an existing safe electrical installation to be upgraded to current standards.
But remember all new electrical work, which you’re going to do, new lights, new sockets, A new kitchen, A new shower, and …must comply with new regs, and that means you either need to have a small 18 edition consumer unit, to cover your new works, or change your current fuse box to a 18 edition consumer unit to cover whole house.
We would recommend you have your fuse board upgraded for a new 18 edition consumer unit. This would provide far more protection to your home and much more importantly, you and your family. A new consumer unit will bring your home up to current electrical safety standards.
Only use a fully qualified electrician when replacing a consumer unit, please don’t try to swap your fuse board yourself or have someone who can’t provide any paper work and not got much experience do it for you, you don’t want to risk it when it comes to electrical safety, trust us!
We will change your old fuse box to a new consumer unit, and we will give you all part P certificate and will notify building control with no hassle.
If you need any advice or you need to know how much will cost, please call us on 07912024140 we will be happy to give advice or change your fuse box / consumer unit.
RCDs are design to trip when earth leakage goes over certain level. In domestics RCDs rated 30ma or 0.03amp. This means when electric leaks to earth more than 30 miliamp. 30ma earth leakage becomes danger to person. So its important RCD trips out before this level. It is quite common for appliance to become faulty especially appliance with element, like cooker or oven or washing machine, and trip the RCD.
What to do when RCDs trips?
First thing to do reset it by turning RCD back on, you may find it trips straight back off again. In this case turn all MCBs (fuses) off, then try to reset RCD by turning it on. If the RCD stays on then one by one turn MCBs on. If there is a fault on one of the circuits, RCD will trips out by one of the MCBs (fuses). In that case leave faulty fuse off then contact an Electrician.
If RCD won’t switch on even when all MCBs (fuses) are off, then go around the house and unplug all plugs from sockets and turn off all switches (light and …)
Don’t worry about things you can’t get to them or no access to unplug.
Then go back to RCD and turn it on, if it stays on then turn MCBs (fuses) on one by one then go back and plug in, all plugs one by one till one of them trips RCD off. Then you know what is the fault. If you find fault is in lighting circuit by turning light switch on and that trips RCD of then contact electrician.
Some appliance with element won’t trip RCD till they get warm and expand. Some fault won’t be find till you use a proper tester.

MCBs / Miniatures / or Circuit Breaker
They come in different current rate and different type which depend on cable size and usage.
In domestic we normally use type B and different sizes, for lighting 6amp , sockets 16 or if its a ring 32amp, showers 45amp and the rest will change depending on cable size and usage .
MCBs design to trip and cut the power off for many reasons, and all are beacouse of when a bigger current flows more then MCBs size.
MCBs will trip out if you have short circuit or over current, that means when live wire and neutral or earth touching each other. for instance a lose wire behind a socket.
MCBs will trip out because of over load, this can happened when you have plugged in too many items, and total load is higher than MCBs rate.
There is no easy way to find out why a MCB trip out, it could even trips out when a light bulb goes.
If a MCB trips out try to turn it back on if it trips straight back off. contact your electrician.

This is a common problem, and it doest mean you have wiring problem, most wiring problem will pick up by MCBs.
When a bulb blows most likely trips MCB on lighting circuit because of over current will flow through the lamp element.
For start you can stop buying cheap bulb, cheap light bulbs made from cheaper and thinner element which are more likely to blow with surge power.
Loose light bulb and lose connection can also blow bulb. Edison screw type can get lose after a while they been used. always check them and make sure they are have good connection with back of the lamp in lamp holder, when they get loose they will start sparking and arcing in lamp holder. make sure wiring connection in lamp holder and switch are not loose either.
don’t forget to make sure to turn electric off when you doing this.
